Topographical and crystalline change on surface by sandblasting improve flexural and shear bond strength of niobia-modified yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of sandblasting on the physical properties and bond strength of two types of translucent zirconia: niobium-oxide-containing yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals ((Y, Nb)-TZP) and 5 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ). Fully sintered disc specimens were either sandblasted with 125 µm alumina particles or left as-sintered. Surface roughness, crystal phase compositions, and surface morphology were explored. Biaxial flexural strength (n=10) and shear bond strength (SBS) (n=12) were evaluated, including thermocycling conditions. Results indicated a decrease in flexural strength of 5Y-PSZ from 601 to 303 MPa upon sandblasting, while (Y, Nb)-TZP improved from 458 to 544 MPa. Both materials significantly increased SBS after sandblasting (p<0.001). After thermocycling, (Y, Nb)-TZP maintained superior SBS (14.3 MPa) compared to 5Y-PSZ (11.3 MPa) (p<0.001). The study concludes that (Y, Nb)-TZP is preferable for sandblasting applications, particularly for achieving durable bonding without compromising flexural strength.

Femtosecond Laser Irradiation to Zirconia Prior to Calcium Phosphate Coating Enhances Osteointegration of Zirconia in Rabbits.

Calcium phosphate (CaP) coating of zirconia and zirconia-based implants is challenging, due to their chemical instability and susceptibility to thermal and mechanical impacts. A 3 mol% yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal was subjected to femtosecond laser (FsL) irradiation to form micro- and submicron surface architectures, prior to CaP coating using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and low-temperature solution processing. Untreated zirconia, CaP-coated zirconia, and FsL-irradiated and CaP-coated zirconia were implanted in proximal tibial metaphyses of male Japanese white rabbits for four weeks. Radiographical analysis, push-out test, alizarin red staining, and histomorphometric analysis demonstrated a much improved bone-bonding ability of FsL-irradiated and CaP-coated zirconia over CaP-coated zirconia without FsL irradiation and untreated zirconia. The failure strength of the FsL-irradiated and CaP-coated zirconia in the push-out test was 6.2-13.1-times higher than that of the CaP-coated zirconia without FsL irradiation and untreated zirconia. Moreover, the adhesion strength between the bone and FsL-irradiated and CaP-coated zirconia was as high as that inducing host bone fracture in the push-out tests. The increased bone-bonding ability was attributed to the micro-/submicron surface architectures that enhanced osteoblastic differentiation and mechanical interlocking, leading to improved osteointegration. FsL irradiation followed by CaP coating could be useful for improving the osteointegration of cement-less zirconia-based joints and zirconia dental implants.

Effect of zirconia surface conditioning before glazing on the wear of opposing enamel: an in vitro study.

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the wear of natural teeth opposing 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) with different surface conditions. Sixty 3Y-TZP specimens were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 10), differing in surface condition. In three groups, the samples underwent glazing-with the glaze applied to roughened (i.e., 106-µm-grit diamond-finished), as-sintered, and polished zirconia. The three remaining groups consisted of unglazed specimens: solely polished samples and diamond-finished samples (106-µm-grit and 46-µm-grit) without further conditioning. Two-body wear was evaluated at extracted, non-carious molars (n = 60), which served as antagonists in chewing simulation (10,000 masticatory cycles, 49N load). As a control, natural teeth with intact enamel surfaces were tested against natural molars (n = 10). All samples were 3D-scanned before and after the chewing simulation (7 Series, Straumann). Volume loss was calculated (Inspect Software, GOM), and statistically analyzed (SPSS Statistics 24, IBM). Volume loss of the natural antagonists decreased in the following order: 106-µm-grit diamond-finished zirconia (4.6 ± 2.5 mm3), glazed 106-µm-grit diamond-finished zirconia (3.8 ± 1.1 mm3), glazed as-sintered zirconia (3.5 ± 0.9 mm3), 46-µm-grit diamond-finished zirconia (1.7 ± 0.6 mm3), control (1.6 ± 0.7 mm3), glazed polished zirconia (1.4 ± 0.5 mm3), and solely polishing (0.4 ± 0.2 mm3). Even when polishing the surfaces before glazing, volume loss was not mitigated to the same extent as after polishing alone. The zirconia surface condition beneath the glazing influences antagonist wear. Although polishing before glazing resulted in acceptable levels of antagonist wear, this approach did not yield as favorable results as polishing alone. For operators favoring glazing, pre-polishing the zirconia surface could be advantageous to reduce wear.

Analysis of soft tissue integration-supportive cell functions in gingival fibroblasts cultured on 3D printed biomaterials for oral implant-supported prostheses.

To date, it is unknown whether 3D printed fixed oral implant-supported prostheses can achieve comparable soft tissue integration (STI) to clinically established subtractively manufactured counterparts. STI is mediated among others by gingival fibroblasts (GFs) and is modulated by biomaterial surface characteristics. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to investigate the GF response of a 3D printed methacrylate photopolymer and a hybrid ceramic-filled methacrylate photopolymer for fixed implant-supported prostheses in the sense of supporting an STI. Subtractively manufactured samples made from methacrylate polymer and hybrid ceramic were evaluated for comparison and samples from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), comprising well documented biocompatibility, served as control. Surface topography was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and interferometry, elemental composition by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and wettability by contact angle measurement. The response of GFs obtained from five donors was examined in terms of membrane integrity, adhesion, morphogenesis, metabolic activity, and proliferation behavior by a lactate-dehydrogenase assay, fluorescent staining, a resazurin-based assay, and DNA quantification. The results revealed all surfaces were smooth and hydrophilic. GF adhesion, metabolic activity and proliferation were impaired by 3D printed biomaterials compared to subtractively manufactured comparison surfaces and the 3Y-TZP control, whereas membrane integrity was comparable. Within the limits of the present investigation, it was concluded that subtractively manufactured surfaces are superior compared to 3D printed surfaces to support STI. For the development of biologically optimized 3D printable biomaterials, consecutive studies will focus on the improvement of cytocompatibility and the synthesis of STI-relevant extracellular matrix constituents.

Comparative analysis of flexural strength of 3D printed and milled 4Y-TZP and 3Y-TZP zirconia

Statement of problemThe mechanical properties of 3 dimensionally (3D) printed zirconia have been reported to be comparable with those of milled zirconia, except for the flexural strength. However, most previous studies tested 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), making it necessary to study 3D printed zirconia with 4 mol% yttria content (4Y-TZP). PurposeThe purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the flexural strength of 3D printed 4Y-TZP with 3Y-TZP materials and milled 4Y-TZP. Material and methodsA total of 80 disk specimens (Ø15×1.5 mm) were fabricated and divided into 4 groups (n=20) using the fabrication method and yttria content: milled 3Y-TZP (Katana HT; Kuraray Noritake), 3D printed 3Y-TZP (TZ-3Y-E; Tosoh), milled 4Y-TZP (Katana STML; Kuraray Noritake), and 3D printed 4Y-TZP (3DMAT; Genoss). The biaxial flexural strength was determined with a piston-on-3-ball test (n=15). The flexural strength of each specimen was measured, and the Weibull modulus (m) and characteristic strength (σ0) were estimated from the fracture load distribution. Two intact and fractured specimens were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystalline phase of the specimens in each group was identified through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis (n=5). A 1-way ANOVA was used to compare the flexural strength among different groups. Subsequently, pairwise comparisons were conducted with the Tukey post hoc method (α=.05). ResultsThe flexural strength of 3D printed 4Y-TZP was significantly higher than that of milled 4Y-TZP (P<.001). In contrast, the flexural strength of 3D printed 3Y-TZP was significantly lower than that of milled 3Y-TZP (P<.001). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the tetragonal phase was the dominant phase in all groups, with the identification of some cubic phase peaks. ConclusionsThree dimensionally printed 4Y-TZP showed significantly higher flexural strength than milled 4Y-TZP and exhibited a clinically acceptable flexural strength exceeding 800 MPa.

Load-bearing capacity of 3D-printed incisor partial-coverage crowns made from zirconia and composite.

This study investigated the fracture resistance of 0.5-mm-thick restorations for minimally invasive therapy. Anterior partial-coverage crowns composed of three-dimensional (3D)-printed 3-mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP; Lithacon 3Y210, Lithoz) and 3D-printed composite (Varseo Smile Crown plus, Bego) were compared with a control group made from milled 3Y-TZP (Cercon ht, DentsplySirona). Three groups each with 27 restorations were produced. For milled 3Y-TZP partial-coverage crowns, drill compensation was needed so the milling bur could access the inner surface at the incisal edge. Restoration fit was verified by cross-sectioning 12 specimens in each group. The remaining 15 restorations were sandblasted (Al2O3, 0.1 MPa) and adhesively cemented (Panavia SA, Kuraray) onto CoCr teeth. Static load-to-failure tests were performed. The load was induced on the incisal edge. The forces needed to fracture the specimens were analyzed using the Welch analysis of variance and post hoc Dunnet-T3 tests. The Weibull parameters were also calculated. Drill compensation increased cement thickness at the loading area by 200 µm in milled 3Y-TZP restorations compared with the 3D-printed partial-coverage crowns. Fracture resistance was the highest in 3D-printed 3Y-TZP restorations (1570±661N) followed by milled 3Y-TZP (886±164N) and 3D-printed composite partial-coverage crowns (570±233 N). Milled 3Y-TZP was associated with a substantially higher Weibull modulus (m=6) than the 3D-printed materials (m=2), suggesting greater reliability. Fracture resistance increased with tighter fit, demonstrating the benefit of the geometric freedom associated with 3D-printing. Future research should focus on making 3D-printed 3Y-TZP more reliable to increase its safety in clinical use.

In Vitro Investigation of Shear Bond Strength of Titanium Alloy Bonded to Monolithic Zirconia Prepared Via Different Surface Roughening Methods Using Different Cements

Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals bonded to titanium alloys via different surface treatment methods using four different cements.&#x0D; Methods: Eighty titanium and monolithic zirconia discs were prepared with computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. All titanium discs and 40 of monolithic zirconia discs were polished by using silicon carbide paper and sandblasted with 50 μm aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Tribochemical silica coating was applied to remaining 40 monolithic zirconia discs. The monolithic zirconia discs were divided into eight groups after surface treatment (n=10). Titanium discs were cemented using conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC), resin-modified GIC, self- adhesive resin cement, and dual-cure resin cement. Mechanical and chemical surface treatment enhances bond strength between zirconia and orthodontic brackets: an in vitro study

ObjectivesTo assess the shear bond strength (SBS) between metal orthodontic brackets and zirconia after receiving different mechanical and chemical surface treatments, and different types of resin adhesive. The failure mode of each treatment protocol was also evaluated.Materials and methodsThe present in vitro experimental study consisted of six surface treatment protocols with two different resin adhesives. One-hundred and forty-four rectangular-shaped 3 mol% yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal blocks were milled, sintered, and embedded in acrylic resin. They were randomly divided into three mechanical (none, air abrasion, and bur grinding) and two chemical surface treatment conditions (no primer and Z-primer). The specimens were divided into two groups according to the resin adhesive received: self-cured (RelyX U200) and light-cured adhesives (Transbond XT). The SBS between the metal bracket and zirconia was tested using a universal testing machine (1-mm/min crosshead speed), and the failure mode was evaluated. Differences in SBS and failure mode were analyzed using Welch ANOVA followed by post-hoc comparison and Fisher’s Exact test, respectively.ResultsBur grinding produced the highest SBS, followed by air abrasion. Z-primer application typically provided a higher SBS regardless of resin adhesive used (p < 0.001). Without primer application, RelyX U200 provided a higher SBS than Transbond XT (p < 0.001). After grinding, using Z-primer and RelyX U200 resulted in a higher SBS than no primer and using Transbond XT (p < 0.001). Adhesive failure at the zirconia–adhesive interface occurred only when Transbond XT was applied without bur grinding, and when using Transbond XT after grinding, but no Z-primer application.ConclusionBur grinding combined with applying an MDP-containing primer and resin adhesive enhances the SBS between zirconia and metal orthodontic brackets.

Er:YAG laser debonding of zirconia and lithium disilicate restorations

Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) restorations of different formulations are being used increasingly in monolithic form for a range of clinical applications. Using rotary instruments to remove such restorations for any purpose is challenging, but they can be removed conservatively with erbium lasers. However, studies on how a laser penetrates different zirconias to break the cement bond between the tooth surface and the zirconia are lacking. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the time required for an erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser to remove different types of zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns. Forty extracted premolar teeth were prepared, scanned, designed, and milled to fabricate 40 computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) crowns, which were assigned to 4 groups (n=10): 3mol% Y-TZP, 4mol% Y-TZP, 5mol% Y-TZP, and lithium disilicate as a control. All crowns were bonded to the teeth with a self-adhesive resin cement (Panavia SA Cement Universal). Each specimen was irradiated with an Er:YAG laser with the following parameters: 300mJ, 15Hz, 5.0W, and a 50-microsecond pulse duration (supershort pulse mode). The irradiation time required for crowns to be retrieved successfully was recorded for each specimen. Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and the Tukey honestly significant difference post hoc test (α=.05). The intaglio surfaces of the restorations were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mean ±standard deviation times in minutes needed for crown debonding were 12.46 ±4.17 for the 3mol% Y-TZP group, 10.30 ±3.33 for the 4mol% Y-TZP group, 4.03 ±1.62 for the 5mol% Y-TZP group, and 2.08 ±0.92 for the lithium disilicate group. A statistically significant difference (P<.05) in the debonding time was found for all investigated groups, expect between the 3mol% and 4mol% Y-TZP groups and between the 5mol% Y-TZP and lithium disilicate groups. SEM analysis of the ceramic surfaces showed no visual damage associated with Er:YAG laser irradiation. Zirconia crown retrieval time with the Er:YAG laser was influenced by the yttria content of the zirconia, with decreasing retrieval time with increasing yttria content. Er:YAG laser debonding of zirconia crowns is a noninvasive, efficient, and rapid approach to the removal of crowns and could be applied in clinical practice.

Longevity of extrinsic stains on monolithic zirconia restorations: An in vitro study

Three-mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) has been commonly used for fixed prosthodontic restorations. The opacity of 3Y-TZP may be masked with external staining, although the longevity of extrinsic stains applied to monolithic zirconia is unclear. The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the color and surface roughness of extrinsically stained zirconia specimens after thermocycling and toothbrushing. Monolithic Ø12.5×1.25-mm zirconia disks were milled from 3Y-TZP blocks, sintered according to manufacturer instructions, and then divided into 3 groups (C, J, and O; n=16) for application of stain and glaze. All specimens underwent 10 000 thermocycles in distilled water before being further divided into 2 dentifrice groups (n=8): normal grit, low relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) (Subgroup N) and abrasive grit, high RDA (Subgroup A). Specimens were brushed in a multistation brushing machine under 1.47N of force using a 5:8 toothpaste and distilled water slurry for 10 000 cycles with a straight (American Dental Association Standard) toothbrush to simulate 1 year of toothbrushing. Color and surface roughness measurements were obtained at 3 time points: baseline, after thermocycling, and after brushing. A 2-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to independently assess changes in color and surface roughness with respect to thermocycling and brushing (α=.05). Group J displayed no significant change in color for either dentifrice system (P>.05). However, a significant change in surface roughness was observed for both dentifrice subgroups (P<.001). Group C specimens displayed significant changes in color (P<.001) and surface roughness (P<.001) for both dentifrice systems. Group O specimens displayed significant changes in color (P<.025) for both dentifrice systems and significant changes in surface roughness (P<.004) for subgroup A, but no significant changes for subgroup N (P=.075). Artificial aging of monolithic zirconia resulted in changes in color and surface roughness that did not surpass the thresholds for perceptibility and acceptability. This study failed to establish durability limits for extrinsic stains applied to 3Y-TZP.

Biological effects of gamma-ray sterilization on 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal: An in vitro study

Selecting the sterilization method is important because sterilization can alter the surface chemistry of implant materials, including zirconia, and influence their cellular biocompatibility. Studies on the biological effects of sterilization on implant materials are lacking. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of gamma-ray irradiated 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) compared with unirradiated titanium, 3Y-TZP, and pure gold. Disk-shaped specimens each of commercially pure grade 4 titanium, 3Y-TZP, gamma-rayed 3Y-TZP, and pure gold were prepared and evaluated for osteogenic potential by using a clonal murine cell line of immature osteoblasts derived from mice (MC3T3-E1 cells). The surface topography (n=3), chemical analysis of the disks (n=3), and cell morphology cultured on these surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Cellular biocompatibility was analyzed for 1 and 3 days after seeding. Cell adhesion and spreading were evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (n=3). Cell proliferation was evaluated using methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay (n=3). Kruskal-Wallis and Bonferroni corrections were used to evaluate the statistical significance of the intergroup differences (α=.05). Gamma-ray sterilization of 3Y-TZP showed significantly higher surface roughness compared with titanium and gold (P<.002). On day 1, the proliferation and adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on gamma-rayed 3Y-TZP were significantly higher than those cultured on gold (P<.05); however, cell spreading was significantly lower than that of titanium on days 1 and 3 (P<.05). On day 3, cell proliferation of gamma-rayed 3Y-TZP was significantly lower than that of unirradiated 3Y-TZP (P<.05). Cell adhesion of gamma-rayed 3Y-TZP was slightly lower than that of zirconia and titanium but without significant difference (P>.05). Gamma-rayed zirconia exhibited increased surface roughness compared with titanium and significantly decreased bioactivity compared with titanium and zirconia. The use of gamma-ray sterilization on zirconia is not promising regarding biocompatibility, and the effect of this sterilization method on implant materials warrants further investigation.

The Influence of Alumina Airborne-Particle Abrasion on the Properties of Zirconia-Based Dental Ceramics (3Y-TZP)

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles of various sizes (50 μm, 110 μm, 250 μm) on the surface properties of 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals). The analysis comprised the Vickers hardness test (HV1kp), a surface roughness evaluation (Ra, Rq, Rz, Rsk, Rsm, Rt, Vo, profile displays), and SEM–EDS microanalysis (scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Any statistical relationships were assessed using the Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis-of-variance-by-rank test (p = 0.05). While airborne-particle abrasion with 50 µm alumina significantly increases the Vickers hardness of 3Y-TZP (1678.8 HV1kp), 110 μm and 250 μm alumina particles do not appear to have any such effect. The surface roughness of 3Y-TZP increases with the size of the alumina particles (Ra, Rq, Rz, Rt, Vo: vertical plane and retention volume assessment); a higher Rsm (horizontal plane assessment) was noted for specimens air-abraded with 250 µm alumina particles; air abrasion with 50 μm alumina particles yielded a symmetrical surface roughness profile (Rsk). The major topographic pattern of the surface of 3Y-TZP is altered by alumina airborne-particle abrasion, with larger alumina particles causing more severe changes. Aluminum traces on the 3Y-TZP surface are observed. The shape of the alumina particles is irregular, with rough edges; the size of the alumina particles plays a significant role in the air abrasion of zirconia-based dental ceramics, affecting their morphology and properties.

Evaluation of Er:YAG laser energy transmitted through novel dental zirconia ceramics.

Erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser debonding is a promising removal method in prosthodontics. This study aimed to assess Er:YAG laser energy transmission through novel zirconia ceramics. Five types of ceramic samples: lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC), self-glazed zirconia (SGZ), 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), 4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP with 5 thicknesses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 mm) and 2 shades (A1, A3), 50 specimens total, were made. Fourier transformation infrared absorption spectra were obtained for each ceramic type, and Er:YAG laser energy transmission tests were conducted for each specimen. The novel zirconia ceramic (SGZ, 4Y-TZP, 5Y-TZP) transmission ranged from 40%-60%. The transmitted laser energy decreased with increasing ceramic thickness, and the differences between different shades were significant (p<0.05). The novel zirconias had a higher translucency than 3Y-TZP at any given thickness and shade, and when the thickness was >1.5 mm, the novel zirconias had a higher translucency than LDC.

Antibacterial and osteogenic activities of thiolated and aminated yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal with tolerance to low temperature degradation

The chemical immobilization of silane on yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) surface is promising in improving both osseointegration and antibacterial activity, however, the effect of low temperature degradation (LTD)-induced the tetragonal (t) to monoclinic (m) phase transformation on the chemical bonding and continuous bioactivity remains unclear. In this study, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) were grafted on the Y-TZP surface. Quantum chemistry revealed that Zr–O–Si bonds formed by t/m-ZrO2 both had a strong tendency to undergo hydrolysis in acidic or neutral environments, but were stable in alkaline environments. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that the release of Si increased during weeks 1–3 on both APTES- and MPTS-grafted surfaces, then decreased rapidly on MPTS-grafted surface while maintained a sustain release on APTES-grafted surface until week 4; in particular, the hydrolysis of Zr–O–Si bonds did not accelerated by LTD. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that LTD-induced reductions in Zr–O–Si bond contents on APTES- and MPTS-grafted surfaces were 0.63% and 1.79%, respectively. In vitro MC3T3-E1 cell experiments confirmed that APTES- and MPTS-grafted Y-TZP surfaces maintained similar adhesion and proliferation before and after LTD. Scanning electron microscopy, laser confocal scanning microscopy, and spread plate assay findings showed favorable anti-Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) effects induced by APTES- and MPTS-grafted t/m-ZrO2 surfaces. Thus, APTES and MPTS both provide LTD-stable and hydrolysis-stable chemical bonding for Y-TZP implants, and t-m phase transformation does not cause detectable effects on Y-TZP bioactivity.

Effect of Er: YAG laser and plasma treatment on the bond strength of Y-TZP

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the effects of Er:YAG laser and plasma treatment on the bond strength between Y-TZP and resin cement. Materials and methodsSixty yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) specimens were fabricated and randomly assigned to six groups (n = 10): control group (group A); Sandblasting treatment (group B); Er:YAG laser group (group C); Ar plasma group (group D); Sandblasting + Ar plasma group (group E); and Er:YAG laser + Ar plasma group (group F). The surface of each zirconia specimen was tested using a contact angle meter, profilometer, and scanning electron microscope, and the shear bonding strength (SBS) was calculated. Statistical analysis was performed with One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with a least significant difference (LSD) test. ResultsThe surface morphology showed no difference between group A and group D, with smooth surfaces and shallow scratches after polishing. The surface roughness value of group C was 2.58 ± 0.14μm and was not significantly different from that of group F (P > 0.05), was higher than that of group A (P < 0.05). The SBS of group B was not significantly different from that of group D (P > 0.05). The hydrophilicity, carbon and oxygen contents, and SBS of group E were similar to those of group F (P > 0.05) and significantly higher than those of groups A, B, C, and D (P < 0.05). SignificanceThe Er:YAG laser and Ar plasma treatment can improve the bonding strength between zirconia and resin cement, and mechanical treatment followed by Ar plasma surface modification is more effective.

Effect of superspeed sintering on translucency, opalescence, microstructure, and phase fraction of multilayered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal and 6 mol% yttria-stabilized partially stabilized zirconia ceramics

Statement of problemThe optical properties of recently developed multilayer zirconia have mainly been studied for the effects of conventional sintering and speed sintering but not as much for the effect of superspeed sintering. As superspeed sintering protocols typically require a higher sintering temperature and higher heating and cooling rates than speed- and conventional sintering protocols, the optical properties of superspeed sintered zirconia may be affected differently. PurposeThe purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of superspeed sintering on the optical properties, microstructure, and phase fraction of multilayered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized (4Y-) and 6 mol% yttria-stabilized (6Y-) zirconia. Material and methodsMultilayered 4Y- and 6Y-zirconia were sectioned. After conventional and superspeed sintering, the translucency parameter (TP), and opalescence parameter (OP) were measured with a spectrophotometer (n=10). To obtain the grain sizes from the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images for each layer (n=2), more than 500 (6Y-zirconia) and 800 grains (4Y-zirconia) were measured by linear intercept methods. The phase fractions were obtained through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis by using the Rietveld method (n=1). The results were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey honest significant difference tests (TP and OP) and by 3-way ANOVA and post hoc Scheffé tests (grain size) (α=.05). ResultsNo layers exhibited a significant difference in TP after superspeed sintering, except the dentin layer (DL) and transition layer 2 (T2) of 4Y- and 6Y-zirconia, respectively. The TP increased (P<.05) in DL for superspeed sintered 4Y-zirconia and decreased (P<.05) in T2 for the superspeed sintered 6Y-zirconia. However, the difference in TP by superspeed sintering was lower than the perceptibility thresholds of 50:50%. The OP decreased (P<.05) in the DL and T2 of 4Y-zirconia after superspeed sintering. For 6Y-zirconia, the OP decreased (P<.05) in all layers except for the transition layer 1 (T1) after superspeed sintering. However, the difference in OP values was minimal, with only a 1.1 difference observed for Zolid Gen-X (4Y) and a range of 1.22 to 1.62 for Katana UTML (6Y) when using superspeed sintering. No significant change was found in the grain size after superspeed sintering of either zirconia. Regardless of the sintering speed, the average grain size of the 6Y-zirconia (conventional: 2.09 to 2.21 μm; superspeed: 2.11 to 2.20 μm) was larger than that of the 4Y-zirconia (conventional: 0.50 to 0.52 μm; superspeed: 0.52 to 0.54 μm). Owing to superspeed sintering, the metastable tetragonal (T′) phase content increased while the tetragonal (T) phase decreased in 4Y-zirconia; in 6Y-zirconia, the cubic (C) phase content increased, while the T′-phase content decreased. ConclusionsSuperspeed sintering did not result in any clinically significant changes in the translucency and opalescence of 4Y- or 6Y-zirconia.

Physicochemical and biological properties of Y-TZP ceramics modified by infiltration with different bioactive glasses for dental implant

Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) are widely used as dental materials due to their excellent mechanical properties and appearance. However, its biological inertness limits its application for dental implants. In this study, the dry-press molded and low-temperature pre-sintered Y-TZP compacts were immersed in 58S, 68S, and 77S bioactive glass (BG) sols prepared by sol-gel method. The different BG sols were infiltrated into the Y-TZP pre-sintered compacts under negative pressure. After aging and drying, the infiltrated Y-TZP compacts were rapidly sintered at 1410 °C through microwave sintering. Results of physicochemical characterizations, including phase composition, morphology, microstructure, and flexural strength, confirm that these three BGs have successfully infiltrated into the Y-TZP matrix and remained therein. Although the modification compromised the densification and mechanical properties of Y-TZP, the flexural strength of the modified Y-TZP/BG samples could still meet the requirement of ISO 6872:2015 (Class 4: >500 MPa). Furthermore, the modified Y-TZP/BG samples showed better bioactivity, primarily characterized by superior protein adsorption capacity and the sustained release of osteogenic-related ions into the culture medium without inducing significant pH changes. Cells cultured on the surface of Y-TZP samples also exhibited better adhesion, spreading, viability, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. The enhanced bioactivity and osteogenic inductivity of Y-TZP/BG samples highlight the promising potential of Y-TZP ceramics infiltrated with different BGs for dental implant applications.

Effect of phase fraction and grain size on translucency of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal

The optical property of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) is affected by various factors. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of phase fraction of zirconia polymorphs and grain size on the translucency of 3Y-TZP. Disk-shaped 3Y-TZP specimens were fabricated. Eight groups were established based on their final sintering temperature and holding time (1500°C-2h, 1550°C-2h, 1570°C-2h, 1570°C-5h, 1570°C-10 h, 1570°C-15 h, 1570°C-20 h, and 1600°C-2h). The sintered specimens were polished to a final thickness of 1.0 mm. The light transmittance was measured, crystalline phase was investigated, and grain size was calculated. In addition, the flexural strength, density, and tetragonality were measured. The translucency and grain size increased significantly, the tetragonal (t) phase fraction decreased, and the cubic (c) and tetragonal double-prime (t″) phase fractions increased as the sintering temperature increased. As the holding time increased, translucency was not significantly different among the groups; grain size significantly increased; t-phase fraction decreased; and the c- and t″-phase fractions increased. Strong positive correlations were observed among translucency, phase fraction, and grain size. Flexural strength was not significantly different among the groups; all groups showed an approximate full density, and their tetragonality increased as the sintering temperature and time increased. The translucency of 3Y-TZP is affected by the crystalline phase fraction and grain size. Increasing c- or t″-phase fractions and t-phase fractions above the critical level by suppressing other undesired phases with increased grain size would improve translucency without compromising the strength.

Evaluation of the effects of thermal changes on the bond strength between zirconia framework and veneering ceramic during the firing process.

The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the effect of thermal changes to shear bond strength during the firing process of veneering porcelain on a zirconia framework. Single yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) framework ceramic (Kavo Dental GmbH) and three different types of veneering ceramics (IPS e.max Ceram, Vita VM9, and GC Initial Zr-FS) were used. One-hundred-twenty standard disc-shaped samples were prepared from zirconia blocks by using a CAD/CAM system (Kavo Everest). Four different cooling processes (maximum, 25°C/min, 50°C/min and 75°C/min) were applied to the veneering ceramics and the shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed. Ceramic surfaces were investigated by using scanning electron microscopeic (SEM). The possible occurrence of a t-m transformation of zirconia was evaluated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Two-way analysis of variance, Bonferroni correction and paired comparisons were used for statistical analysis. The main effects of veneering ceramics on shear bond strength were found to be significant (p=0.042). The mean shear bond strength values differ according to the cooling process (p<0.001). The monoclinic phase ratio increased in groups with fast cooling process. The thermal changes during the firing process of veneering porcelain on a zirconia framework influenced the shear bond strength of the all-ceramic bilayered system. A slow cooling process provided higher strength for bilayer ceramic samples.

Enhanced bioactivity and hydrothermal aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics for dental implant.

Although yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) ceramics have been widely used as restorative materials due to their high mechanical strength, unique esthetic effect, and good biocompatibility, their general application to implant materials is still limited by their biological inertness and hydrothermal aging phenomenon. Existing studies have attempted to investigate how to enhance the bioactivity or hydrothermal aging resistance of Y-TZP. Still, more studies need to be done on the modification that combines these two aspects. In this study, Y-TZP was prepared by 77S bioactive glass (BG) sol and akermanite (AKT) sol infiltration and microwave sintering, which provided Y-TZP with high bioactivity while maintaining resistance to hydrothermal aging. Results of phase composition evaluation, microstructural characteristics, and mechanical property tests showed that modified Y-TZP specimens exhibited little or no tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t → m) transformation and maintained relatively high mechanical properties after accelerated hydrothermal aging treatment. The in vitro biological behaviors showed that the introduction of 77S BG and AKT significantly promoted cell adhesion, spreading, viability, and proliferation on the surface of modified Y-TZP ceramics. Therefore, this modification could effectively enhance the bioactivity and hydrothermal aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics for its application in dental implant materials.
